There are seasons when faith looks like moving mountains.
And then there are seasons when faith simply looks like still being here.
Still praying.
Still obeying.
Still believing.
Still choosing what is right.
Still putting one foot in front of the other when you thought surely you would have seen the answer by now.
Scripture has much to say about endurance, but when we look beneath our English translations into the Hebrew and Greek, we discover something beautiful:
Biblical endurance is not one-dimensional.
Sometimes endurance means waiting.
Sometimes it means standing.
Sometimes it means remaining under pressure.
And sometimes the question becomes:
Do I have the capacity to keep going?
That is where the Hebrew word יָכֹל — yakhol (often transliterated yakol) adds an important layer to our understanding.

1. Qavah — Waiting Without Letting Go
קָוָה — qavah
To wait for, hope for, look eagerly for, expect.
One of the best-known examples appears in Isaiah:
“But those who wait on YHWH renew their strength…”
— Isaiah 40:31
Waiting in Scripture is not necessarily inactivity.
You can be waiting while obeying.
Waiting while building.
Waiting while praying.
Waiting while doing the last thing YHWH told you to do.
There is a difference between doing nothing because you have given up and remaining faithful because you are waiting on YHWH.
qavah carries the idea of expectation.
It says:
“I have not seen it yet, but I have not stopped looking toward YHWH.”
That is endurance.
2. Chazaq — Strengthen Your Grip
חָזַק — chazaq
To be strong, grow strong, strengthen, prevail, hold firmly.
We repeatedly encounter this idea when YHWH tells His people to be strong.
Joshua was preparing to enter territory filled with uncertainty, opposition, warfare, and responsibility when YHWH told him:
“Be strong and courageous…”
— Joshua 1:6
Notice that YHWH did not tell Joshua that there would be nothing difficult ahead.
He strengthened Joshua for what was ahead.
Sometimes we pray for YHWH to remove everything requiring strength when He is actually teaching us how to become strong in Him.
Endurance does not always mean the pressure immediately disappears.
Sometimes endurance means:
My hands are tired, but I have not released what YHWH gave me to carry.
3. Amad — Just Keep Standing
עָמַד — amad
To stand, remain, take one’s stand, stay in place.
There are moments when victory does not look dramatic.
Victory looks like standing.
You didn't abandon your convictions.
You didn't allow pressure to redefine truth.
You didn't walk away from YHWH because obedience became costly.
You are still standing.
This reminds us of the words:
“…and having done all, to stand.”
— Ephesians 6:13
There are seasons when we want to run, fix, force, produce, and control.
But sometimes YHWH says:
Stand.
Stand in truth.
Stand in obedience.
Stand in integrity.
Stand until the storm passes.
Never underestimate the spiritual significance of simply remaining upright when something was designed to knock you down.
4. Hupomonē — Remaining Under Pressure
The Greek word ὑπομονή — hupomonē is one of the clearest New Testament words for endurance, perseverance, and steadfastness.
It is related to ὑπό (hypo), “under,” and μένω (menō), “remain/stay.”
This gives us a powerful picture:
Endurance stays under the weight without abandoning faithfulness.
Paul writes:
“…tribulation works endurance; and endurance, approvedness; and approvedness, expectation.”
— Romans 5:3–4
James gives us another dimension:
“…the proving of your belief works endurance. And let endurance have a perfect work…”
— James 1:3–4
We often want YHWH to finish the trial.
But Scripture tells us there is also a work being finished in us.
Pressure exposes.
Pressure strengthens.
Pressure teaches.
Pressure reveals what our confidence actually rests upon.
This does not mean suffering itself is good.
It means suffering does not have to be wasted.
YHWH can produce something through what we endure.
5. Yakhol — “Am I Able?”
Now we come to a Hebrew word that adds another powerful dimension.
יָכֹל — yakhol
To be able, have capacity, have power, prevail.
Technically, yakhol is not simply the Hebrew equivalent of the English word “endurance.”
Its primary idea is ability or capacity.
And that makes it incredibly relevant to endurance.
Because eventually prolonged difficulty asks a question:
“Can I keep doing this?”
We see yakhol in Numbers 13.
When the spies returned from surveying the land, most of them said:
“We are not able (lo nukhal) to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.”
— Numbers 13:31
Notice what happened.
YHWH had already spoken concerning the land.
But the people looked at the opposition and concluded:
We are not able.
Their assessment of their own capacity became larger in their minds than the word YHWH had spoken.
That is a dangerous place.
Because endurance often breaks down first in what we believe is possible.
6. Jeremiah Reached the End of His Own Capacity
Jeremiah gives us another fascinating use of yakhol.
He became weary of speaking YHWH's word because of the reproach he continually experienced.
He essentially decided:
I will stop speaking.
But then he said:
“And it was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones. And I became weary of holding it back, and was unable.”
— Jeremiah 20:9
The Hebrew again uses yakhol.
Jeremiah discovered something:
He had reached the limits of what he could contain.
Yet YHWH's word continued burning within him.
There will be seasons when we discover the limitations of our own strength.
That discovery does not necessarily mean we have failed.
Sometimes it is where dependence begins.
7. Endurance Does Not Mean Pretending You Are Never Tired
This distinction matters.
Biblical endurance does not require pretending:
“I’m fine.”
“I’m never tired.”
“This doesn't hurt.”
“I can handle everything.”
Scripture contains faithful people who became exhausted, grieved, afraid, discouraged, and overwhelmed.
Yet they continued returning to YHWH.
Endurance is not the absence of weariness.
Endurance is faithfulness that survives weariness.
Galatians 6:9 tells us:
“And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not grow weary.”
There is a harvest connected to continuing.
Not frantic striving.
Not proving yourself.
Not refusing appropriate rest.
But refusing to permanently abandon what YHWH has actually called you to do merely because the process became difficult.
8. There Is a Difference Between Resting and Quitting
Even endurance requires wisdom.
Rest can be part of endurance.
A runner who slows down has not necessarily left the race.
A farmer who sleeps has not abandoned his field.
And a believer who needs to recover has not automatically lost faith.
Sometimes the most faithful thing you can do is replenish what has been depleted so that you can continue.
YHWH created rhythms of work and rest.
Endurance is not endless human exertion.
It is sustained faithfulness.
9. The Biblical Picture of Endurance
When we bring these words together, a fuller picture emerges:
Qavah — קָוָה
I will wait with expectation.
Chazaq — חָזַק
I will strengthen my grip.
Amad — עָמַד
I will remain standing.
Hupomonē — ὑπομονή
I will remain steadfast under pressure.
Yakhol — יָכֹל
And when I question whether I have the capacity to continue, I will remember that my ability is not the final measure of what YHWH can accomplish through me.
Together they paint a beautiful picture:
Wait. Strengthen. Stand. Remain. Continue.
10. Don't Throw Away Your Confidence
Hebrews gives perhaps one of the clearest instructions for someone standing between obedience and fulfillment:
“Do not, then, lose your boldness, which has great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the desire of Elohim, you receive the promise.”
— Hebrews 10:35–36
Notice the order.
You have done His will.
And yet...
you still need endurance.
That means obedience and fulfillment do not always happen beside one another.
Sometimes there is a space between them.
A waiting space.
A stretching space.
A strengthening space.
A space where you wonder whether anything is happening.
And Scripture calls that space:
a place for endurance.
When You Feel Like You Cannot Continue
Maybe you are tired.
Maybe the thing you believed would take months has taken years.
Maybe you have obeyed and still haven't seen the fruit.
Maybe you have fallen and gotten back up so many times that getting back up no longer feels courageous.
Get up anyway.
Not because you possess unlimited strength.
But because YHWH does.
“For seven times a righteous man falls and rises…”
— Proverbs 24:16
You do not need tomorrow's strength today.
You need enough grace for today's obedience.
Then tomorrow, you return again.
Qavah.
Wait for YHWH.
Chazaq.
Strengthen your hands.
Amad.
Stand.
Hupomonē.
Remain steadfast beneath the pressure.
And when your heart whispers,
“But am I able?”
remember yakhol.
Your human capacity has limits.
YHWH's does not.
Sometimes endurance isn't running beautifully.
Sometimes endurance is limping toward YHWH and refusing to turn around.
And sometimes the testimony isn't:
“I never became weary.”
It is:
“I became weary — but by the strength YHWH supplied, I continued.”
Reflection
Where has YHWH been teaching me to endure?
Am I in a season of qavah—waiting and expecting?
Do I need chazaq—renewed strength?
Is YHWH asking me simply to amad—stand?
What pressure currently requires hupomonē—steadfastness?
Where have I begun telling myself “lo yakhol” — “I am not able”?
And most importantly:
Have I been measuring what is possible by my present strength—or by the faithfulness of the One who called me?
“But those who wait on YHWH renew their strength; they raise up the wing like eagles, they run and are not weary, they walk and do not faint.”
— Isaiah 40:31
Keep walking.
The fact that you need endurance does not mean YHWH has abandoned the journey.
It may mean you are in the very place where endurance is being formed.
